Notes from Andy – Summer Escape From Skid Row
When I was growing up, going to camp was one of the most important experiences of my life. At camp, I listened to powerful messages from God’s Word, played sports, and went swimming. Every year, I made lifelong friends I’ll never forget and renewed my commitment to Christ.
Youth pastors say kids get more out of one week at camp than they get out of one year at church. Camp transforms their hearts like nowhere else. That’s why I try to make sure every kid at Union Rescue Mission and Hope Gardens get the chance to go to The Oaks summer camp. The Oaks, run by World Impact, is a beautiful, Bible-based, 600-acre wilderness camp near Lake Hughes, an hour and a half north of Los Angeles and the tough urban streets and painful memories that too many of our kids have endured.
Because of the Great Recession, URM has been blessed with more children than ever before. This summer I hope we can send more than 100 of our precious kids to The Oaks.
Skid Row and enjoy nature and campfires and godly friends and mentors. For one week, they’ll feel close to God instead of abandoned. They’ll feel safe, cared for, and loved. For one week, their eyes will open to a whole new world — one week that can shape their whole lives forever.
